Steps to Build a Website for a Small Business

A company website gives small businesses their own unique online identity. It is a platform where potential customers find and get to know the company. A web presence is essential for both online and brick-and-mortar businesses. Customers not only purchase products online but also turn to the internet to check the opening hours and locations for brick-and-mortar stores. The following is a guide to help business owners create an informative and functional website.

Define the Website Purpose

Different business types have different purposes for their company website. For e-commerce companies, the primary use of the website is to sell products to visitors. To increase the chance that visitors will purchase, companies need to add in call-to-action buttons and ensure the smoothness of the buying process when building the website. If the company is not purchase-oriented, the website can be used to provide general information. In this case, make sure the website’s content is not too wordy and the crucial information is put in plain sight to allow the customer to find it conveniently.

Create a Good Website Address

The website domain name is crucial for obtaining traffic and optimizing search engine results. Companies should make their website address catchy and easy to remember. Don’t add in long and unordered words, and avoid using numbers and hyphens. Use words that are easy to spell to make sure customers can type the URL correctly. Make sure the extension of the website address is appropriate. If it is not a particular organization such as government or educational institution, use .com as the extension instead of .gov and .edu. As your desired .com is taken, you could put a bid to buy it or use an alternative domain extension (full list of extensions).

Choose a Platform for Content Creation

Companies that sell products on their website need a platform to help them launch and design their online store. Shopify is a cloud-based e-commerce platform that allows companies to create a professional storefront. It also offers tools to let companies manage their product detail page, payment process, and inventory. For companies that leverage their website to deliver general information, they can use WordPress to create content. WordPress is an excellent content management system that allows companies to edit and alter the appearance of their websites. It has a large number of page themes and frameworks that users can choose. Moreover, it is intuitive and easy to use. Enterprises can use it to build a site and mostly avoid writing code.
